Pre-Sale Question about Laptop
Where I live at, internet services are included with renting the house. I use my laptop to connect via wireless. I do not have a modem or router, I was only provided with the web key to enter into my laptop to access the internet.
My question is this: Can I use VOIPo services by connecting the device directly to my laptop and phone I will purchase once I find out if I can use this service without a modem or router?
Thank you
Re: Pre-Sale Question about Laptop
If you enable "Internet Connection Sharing" on your laptop, I suppose that would work, but it would require you to have the laptop on all the time. A better solution would be a "wireless bridge", sometimes called a "game adapter". This is a small device that connects by WiFi to the network and has an Ethernet port for the local device (the phone adapter in this case.)
I'll also note that some wireless routers can be configured to serve as a bridge.

I have a wireless router laying around somewhere...how would I do this?? I really would like to have this service. Its a Linksys wireless router.
Since the service has a 30 day guarantee...I could try this to see if it'll work...if not, I'll cancel the service since I would not be able to use it. Just need to know how to set it up.
Re: Pre-Sale Question about Laptop
I have two linksys routers and I have one set up as a repeater-bridge and I use the firmware dd-wrt. Check it out and see if your router can use this at http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index
After that, just follow the instructions to make your router a bridge - http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge
If you want to use the default firmware on the router, then you will probably have to do more digging to see how to make your router a bridge
Re: Pre-Sale Question about Laptop
Thanks. I'll see what I can find out. I appreciate all of the responses to my question. If anyone else wants to chime in how they make wireless work with this service please post.

If you are willing to get a good router, this is likely the best answer.
For router suggestions see this thread:

Some are close to $30
